What is IT Asset Disposition (ITAD) and why is it important for your organization?

Outdated IT equipment rarely disappears on its own. Servers, switches and storage units that go out of production often still contain company data, while also still holding residual value. IT Asset Disposition, or ITAD for short, is the structured process for handling that equipment safely, compliantly and sustainably.

What ITAD actually involves

ITAD begins the moment hardware goes out of production and only ends once the equipment has been demonstrably wiped, refurbished, reused or recycled. So it is about more than disposal: it is the final piece of lifecycle management.

In practice this means: taking stock of which assets are being decommissioned, securely wiping data, assessing what can get a second life, and processing the rest according to the applicable rules.

Why data security is at the core

Equipment that leaves the building without demonstrable data wiping is a risk. It does not matter whether it concerns a single drive or an entire rack.

That is why secure data wiping should be a standard part of the process, not an optional extra step afterwards.

Residual value instead of write off

A lot of equipment still has value after its first phase of life. By refurbishing and redeploying hardware, that value stays in the chain. For eligible equipment you receive a payout from us.

This turns a write off item into a contribution to next year's IT budget.

The sustainable side

Reuse extends the lifespan of hardware and thereby reduces demand for new production. That is exactly the premise of a circular IT chain: keeping equipment in use as long as possible and only processing it when there truly is no other option.

ITAD is therefore both a risk measure and a sustainability measure. The two do not exclude each other, they reinforce each other.
